This is a long-term, multidisciplinary research initiative promoted by the <strong>University of Bergamo<\/strong> and the <strong>Harvard Graduate School of Design<\/strong>, with the support of <strong>Fondazione Pesenti   <\/strong>e <strong>the Municipality of Bergamo<\/strong>.<\/p><p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4431 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bergamo2035.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Screenshot-2025-05-14-142536.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"277\" height=\"393\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bergamo2035.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Screenshot-2025-05-14-142536.png 549w, https:\/\/www.bergamo2035.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Screenshot-2025-05-14-142536-212x300.png 212w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 277px) 100vw, 277px\" \/><\/p><p>The research explores the challenges related to the integration of digital technologies and physical spaces within the retail world, examining both the opportunities and the consequences across urban, commercial, and domestic contexts, as well as user experiences in both tangible and virtual environments.<br>Through a comparative analysis of <em>retail <\/em>in the United States and Europe\u2014supported by a systematic review of academic literature, <em>case studies<\/em>, and field investigations\u2014the project aims to analyze the history of <em>retail<\/em>, understand current dynamics, and\u2014focusing especially on the cities of Boston and Bergamo\u2014propose innovative solutions at five different scales: <\/p><p><strong>The shopping experience in retail stores<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Shops and window displays<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Smart home environments<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Medium-sized shopping centers<\/strong><\/p><p><strong><em>Mobile <\/em>and hybrid platforms<\/strong><\/p><p><strong> <\/strong><\/p><p><strong> <\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Main Topics<\/strong><\/p><p>&#8211; <strong>DESIGN RESEARCH<\/strong>: An overview of the interaction between design and research. Design as a method to structure innovative research strategies, and research as a tool to generate new approaches to design. Examples and case studies from Harvard GSD complement the theoretical framework. <\/p><p>&#8211; <strong>DESIGN THINKING<\/strong>: A study of design thinking methodologies, applying novel and interdisciplinary approaches to address problems across various fields and scales. Often, solving a problem requires an innovative mindset that goes beyond conventional thinking. By combining subjective analysis with objective data, students are encouraged to reconsider business or design challenges from unconventional perspectives.  <\/p><p>&#8211; <strong>HUMAN-CENTERED DESIGN AND USER EXPERIENCE<\/strong>: Principles of human-centered design, focusing on strategies to evaluate and anticipate the user experience from the perspective of diverse individuals.
