Given the objectives, the study requires cooperation and the integration of multidisciplinary knowledge, as well as the active involvement of academic experts and international opinion leaders, in order to conduct comparative analyses with international cases, making Bergamo and its territory a laboratory of innovation in which to develop and evolve sustainable development models.
The project is structured in two phases: the development of the 2035 city vision, followed by the vision for the city and territory of Bergamo.

The development of the 2035 city vision aims to define how the European city will evolve in the medium term. In order to generate a comparative vision, based on the most relevant cases on the international scene, this phase involves the following interconnected activities:

  • Vision development: we identified several specific research areas and international case studies related to the themes of the study. This activity was partially carried out in collaboration with the Harvard University Graduate School of Design (GSD).
  • Assessment: this activity aimed to investigate the current state of knowledge on the topics addressed at the international level, seeking to identify the most interesting and relevant development trends, considering both their transformative potential and the tangible benefits already underway.
  • Development and communication: to share and communicate the results of this first phase, we organized a dedicated public event. Specifically, a presentation of the overall vision was held at the end of the project’s first year. This event will also serve as the first in a series of more focused public meetings on the project’s individual areas of investigation. At this stage, it is important to establish connections with other initiatives at both national and international levels.

There are two main objectives: to develop a new vision for the city through a selection of reference case studies, and to define a development plan for the city of Bergamo.

This phase is divided into three main activities:

  1. Focus on the city of Bergamo: we aim to analyze the current state of the city of Bergamo based on the key dimensions identified in the previous phase, in terms of: Environment, Infrastructure and Mobility, Economic Networks and Structures, Research, Knowledge, and Innovation.
  2. Development of the vision for the city of Bergamo: we aim to apply the Bergamo 2035 model by involving national and international experts and researching cases that can serve as inspiration and points of comparison. Workshops will be organized with the participation of international speakers who can share insights from successful experiences in the specific sectors of the research project.
  3. Communication of the Bergamo 2035 vision: to make the project results public and engage the city in shaping its future, communication events will be organized. At the conclusion of the entire research, a project presentation event will be held, focusing on the specific themes related to the city of Bergamo. On this occasion, we will present and publicly release the final research report. There will also be a meeting and discussion session with the participation of experts previously involved in other phases of the project.
